I'm still envisioning myself as a player in the Tecmo Bowl. I'm still playing this video game. I've still got the machine which I could play on. But it's in a storage box somewhere in storage. It's iconic. It makes me happy to hear grown men in their 40s who say, 'Hey, my cousin and I were involved in the most intense struggle of our life because we both wanted to be in the Tecmo Bowl when we were young. Therefore, our parents took the game and my dad locked it up in his tool cabinet. We were unable to play it for a whole month since the fighting was intense."I hear that a lot. When I attend exhibitions for sports memorabilia, I see there are people who come up with the video game. They tell me, 'I've got the machine to play it on. My kids play it. My grandkids and I play it ... too. And everyone has a debate about who's gonna take on the role of Bo Jackson.' Tecmo Bowl ... that was a lot of tech at the time. When you look at it today and it's like, "Wow it's an old-fashioned.'
Do you really believe that you've not participated in Tecmo Bowl?
I've ever played Tecmo Bowl. That's the real truth. I've watched people play it a lot. But I knew what I could accomplish. I was aware of that the Tecmo Bowl man could do. It's fun hearing people compliment me on that day's game.
A part of your video game return to Madden includes celebrating Nike's legendary Bo Knows campaign. Let us go back to the beginning. How did the brand introduce the idea for Bo Knows to you?
We found Bo Knows accidentally. Writers, directors, sketchers and we had been sat in a circle, looking over storyboards for our next shoot. We wanted to trim it down since it was slightly too long. Everyone was offering their opinion on this and this. I said, "Why should we not do this? ... Why shouldn't we take this idea and move it over here, place this here, put it together and cut off 5 or 6 minutes?' Then they glanced to me in awe and then replied "Wow. It's probably going to work. Then someone across the table looked at me , and said "Bo Knows!' and it stuck. It was not like anyone sat around and ran through their thoughts or stayed up all night with that phrase. The incident just occurred while sitting around the table talking about shootings.
