The tutu's evolution from a lengthy skirt to a "cloud of gas"
Many people are shocked to learn that until the second half of the nineteenth century, ballerinas danced on stage in magnificent gowns that differed little from those worn by the audience. Ballett tutu was a corset-style dress, a little shorter than normal and fairly thick. Ballerinas usually danced in high shoes.
