"You spend years iterating and fine-tuning on this stuff. We knew what Rocket League was from the start, which is a really rare benefit in the games industry. It’s not often that you know day one what your game is and what your end goal is, and so that gave us the benefit of almost two years of fine-tuning. Sometimes we would play on a Friday and I would take the game home over the weekend and just tinker with how hard you hit the ball, at what speed, how powerful is your jump, how the camera reacts, etc. And honestly, it’s hard to point to any one thing. It’s just the accumulation of that many hours of just tweaking and tweaking until it feels perfect."

It was far from smooth sailing, though. Northern lost in the second round to North American champions NRG, meaning that they dropped down to the lower bracket and had to play six consecutive series to fight for their tournament life. (RLCS has a double elimination format.) That included beating NRG in a rematch in the lower bracket finals. After coming through the lower bracket, Northern had to play Mock-It in the grand finals, a team that had zero losses to that point. Northern reset the bracket by defeating Mock-It in six games in the first series before pushing the second matchup to seven. Mock-It led three games to two in the second series before Northern took both games six and seven.

Another roadblock in Northern's way was that they weren't playing with their optimal squad. One of the players, Maestro, was unable to attend due to exams in school. So, their substitute, Turbopolsa, had to step up and fill that role. To his credit, Turbopolsa played an incredible tournament and was a major reason why Northern ended up winning.

Coverage of esports is slowly but very surely gaining traction via major media outlets, and BBC Three – which provided Gfinity Elite Series coverage last summer – is going to broadcast the semi-final and final of the UK’s first ESL Dota 2 major this weekend.Live coverage of the ESL One Birmingham 2018 will kick off tomorrow (Saturday, May 26) at 2pm when the semi-finals are played, with the grand final being shown on Sunday at 3pm. The tournament has a total prize pool of some $1 million (£750,000, AU$1.3 million).You can watch with BBC iPlayer or via the BBC Three website (it’s an online channel these days, in case you missed that development), and this, the Broadcasting Corporation notes, is the first time that an ESL event has been shown live on the Beeb.

Rocket League fans are preparing for the launch of the games brand new Halloween event, which is now less than 12 hours away.Psyonix announced the event on Friday, which is the games first-ever Halloween Themed event, currently known as the 'Haunted Hallows Event'.This isn't the first time Psyonix has introduced Halloween themed content into the game, with the developers previously releasing a series of free items in Rocket League’s customisation Garage.However this will be the first official Halloween themed event. As such, Psyonix have some new systems in place for PS4, Xbox One and PC players.Sorry, Nintendo Switch owners, it doesn't look like the game is going to be ready in time for you to play the event.Players won't have long to wait for the event to start, but in the meantime, you can take a look at some of the new screenshots released so far in the gallery below.But keep reading for full details on the games start time, end time, crates, items, new prices and some brand new in-game features.
