DID YOU KNOW? 1961’s “Reptilicus” is Denmark's first, last and only giant monster film as of 2024? It was a co-production between the United States and Denmark. It was shot entirely in Denmark using architecture and landscapes that were unfamiliar to American audiences in the early 1960s. And it was filmed twice by two different directors but using the same cast. For the Danish version of the film, all the actors spoke in the Danish language. English was spoken for the American version, and the US version was also more violent than its Danish counterpart. New scenes were added that do not appear in the version released in Europe, including footage showing Reptilicus vomiting acid saliva. Because Denmark had never filmed a kaiju movie before, Danish FX artists worked longer hours at cheaper rates to ensure that their craftsmanship would be favorably compared to their Japanese counterparts, and that “Reptilicus” would be favorably compared against Godzilla. Although poorly received in the US, “Reptilicus” becomes a cult classic in its homeland of Denmark.
